Comprehensive Assessment

What We Assess With a Knee Ultrasound

Our knee scan covers all major soft tissue structures around the knee joint. We assess ligaments, tendons, bursae, cysts and fluid collections in real time.

ACL / MCL / LCL Ligament Injuries

Assess partial and complete tears of the knee ligaments following trauma, twisting injuries or sports impacts.

Meniscus Tears

Evaluate the medial and lateral meniscus for tears, degeneration and associated joint effusion.

Baker's Cyst

Identify fluid-filled cysts behind the knee (popliteal cysts) that cause tightness, swelling and restricted movement.

Bursitis

Detect inflammation of the pre-patellar and infra-patellar bursae — common in kneeling occupations and after direct impact.

Patellar Tendinopathy

Assess the patellar tendon for thickening, tears and degenerative changes often seen in jumping sports.

Quadriceps Tendon Injuries

Evaluate the quadriceps tendon above the kneecap for partial or complete tears affecting extension.

Joint Effusion & Swelling

Identify excess fluid within the knee joint — a sign of underlying injury, inflammation or arthritis.

IT Band Syndrome

Assess iliotibial band thickening and inflammation at the lateral knee, common in runners and cyclists.

Runner's Knee

Evaluate patellofemoral pain syndrome including cartilage changes, tracking issues and surrounding soft tissue irritation.

Is This Scan Right for You?

Who Should Book a Private Knee Scan?

Sports injuries. Whether you have twisted your knee playing football, felt something pop during a run, or landed awkwardly — ultrasound can quickly identify ligament damage, meniscus tears and tendon injuries so you know exactly what you are dealing with.

Persistent knee pain. If your knee has been painful for weeks or months without a clear cause, imaging helps rule out structural problems like bursitis, cysts, tendinopathy or joint effusion that may not be obvious from a physical examination alone.

GP diagnosis needing imaging. Your GP may suspect a specific condition but cannot confirm it without a scan. Rather than waiting weeks for NHS imaging, a private knee ultrasound gives you answers within days and a report your GP can act on immediately.

Physiotherapy referrals. Many physiotherapists recommend imaging to confirm a diagnosis before beginning treatment. A clear scan report helps your physio target the right structures and build an evidence-based rehabilitation plan.

NHS waiting list alternative. If you are on a waiting list for an NHS scan or consultant appointment, a private knee ultrasound can provide the imaging you need now — often within the same week — so treatment is not delayed.

Post-surgery follow-up. If you have had knee surgery and are experiencing new symptoms — swelling, stiffness or pain — ultrasound can check for complications such as fluid collections, scar tissue or recurrent cysts without an invasive procedure.

What to Expect During Your Knee Scan

Before Your Scan

No special preparation is needed. Wear shorts or loose-fitting trousers that can be rolled above the knee. You do not need to fast or stop any medications. Arrive a few minutes early to complete a brief medical questionnaire.

During the Scan

A warm gel is applied to the skin and a handheld probe is used to image the knee joint in real time. You may be asked to bend or straighten your leg so we can assess structures dynamically. The scan is completely painless.

How Long It Takes

A single knee ultrasound takes approximately 15-30 minutes. If you are having both knees scanned, allow up to 45 minutes. We never rush — every structure is thoroughly assessed.

Your Results

You will receive a verbal explanation of findings immediately after the scan. A detailed written report with images is sent within 24-48 hours, ready to share with your GP, physio or consultant.

FAQs

Knee Ultrasound FAQs

Can ultrasound detect a torn meniscus?

Yes. Ultrasound can identify meniscus tears, particularly peripheral tears and those associated with joint effusion or cyst formation. While MRI remains the gold standard for deep internal meniscus tears, ultrasound is an excellent first-line investigation that can detect many meniscal injuries and guide whether further imaging is needed.

Do I need a referral for a private knee scan?

No referral is needed. You can book directly with us online or by phone. Many patients come to us after a sports injury, persistent knee pain, or while waiting for an NHS appointment. If your GP, physiotherapist or consultant has recommended imaging, we can provide it without the usual NHS wait.

How long does a knee ultrasound take?

A single knee ultrasound typically takes 15-30 minutes depending on the complexity of your symptoms. We allow enough time to thoroughly assess all relevant structures and explain our findings to you during the scan.

Is knee ultrasound or MRI better?

Both have their strengths. Ultrasound excels at imaging superficial soft tissue structures — tendons, ligaments, bursae, cysts and muscle tears — and allows dynamic, real-time assessment during movement. MRI is better for deep internal structures like the cruciate ligaments and articular cartilage. In many cases, ultrasound provides a diagnosis without the need for MRI. We will advise if further imaging is recommended.

What should I wear to a knee ultrasound?

Wear shorts or loose-fitting trousers that can be easily rolled above the knee. No other special preparation is needed — you do not need to fast or stop any medications before your scan.

How quickly will I get my results?

You will receive a verbal summary of findings immediately after your scan. A detailed written report is provided within 24-48 hours, which you can share with your GP, physiotherapist or consultant to guide your treatment.
