Understanding NIPT

What Is NIPT?

Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) is an advanced screening blood test that analyses tiny fragments of your baby's DNA circulating in your bloodstream. From as early as 10 weeks of pregnancy, enough cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) is present in your blood for the laboratory to screen for the most common chromosomal conditions.

Unlike invasive procedures such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS), NIPT carries no risk of miscarriage. It requires only a simple blood draw from your arm — the same as a routine blood test. There is no needle near your womb and no risk to your baby.

NIPT is a screening test, not a diagnostic test. This means it tells you how likely it is that your baby has a chromosomal condition, but it cannot give a definitive yes or no answer. However, with detection rates exceeding 99% for Down's syndrome and false-positive rates below 0.1%, NIPT is significantly more accurate than traditional NHS combined screening (which has a detection rate of approximately 85%).

Many parents choose NIPT for the reassurance it provides. If results come back low-risk, you can continue your pregnancy with greater confidence. If results indicate a higher risk, you will have the information and time to make informed decisions about further testing with full support.

Screening Coverage

What NIPT Screens For

NIPT analyses cell-free fetal DNA to screen for the most clinically significant chromosomal conditions. The scope of screening depends on which tier you choose.

Down's Syndrome (Trisomy 21)

The most common chromosomal condition. NIPT detects Trisomy 21 with over 99% sensitivity — significantly more accurate than traditional combined screening.

All tiers

Edwards' Syndrome (Trisomy 18)

A serious chromosomal condition affecting development. NIPT screens for Trisomy 18 with over 98% sensitivity from just 10 weeks gestation.

All tiers

Patau's Syndrome (Trisomy 13)

A rare but serious condition. NIPT provides early, highly accurate screening for Trisomy 13 alongside the other major trisomies.

All tiers

Sex Chromosome Conditions

Screen for Turner's syndrome (45,X), Klinefelter's syndrome (47,XXY), Triple X (47,XXX) and Jacob's syndrome (47,XYY).

Advanced & Absolute

Who Should Consider NIPT?

Anyone wanting reassurance. NIPT is suitable for any pregnant woman from 10 weeks gestation who wants more detailed screening than standard NHS combined testing provides. You do not need to be "high risk" to benefit — many parents choose NIPT simply for the peace of mind it offers.

Elevated combined screening risk. If your NHS combined screening (nuchal translucency scan and blood test) has returned a higher-chance result, NIPT can provide a much more accurate assessment before you consider invasive diagnostic testing. Many women with a "high risk" combined screening result receive reassuring NIPT results.

Women over 35. The chance of chromosomal conditions increases with maternal age. NIPT gives older mothers a highly accurate screening option that avoids the risks associated with amniocentesis, while providing far more reliable results than age-related risk calculations alone.

Anxiety about chromosomal conditions. Pregnancy can be an anxious time, especially if you have experienced loss or complications before. NIPT provides early, highly accurate information that can significantly reduce anxiety and allow you to enjoy your pregnancy with greater confidence.

Those wanting to avoid invasive testing. Amniocentesis and CVS carry a small risk of miscarriage (around 1 in 200). NIPT provides a safe, non-invasive first step that can help you decide whether invasive testing is truly necessary — for most women, it will confirm that it is not.

Couples wanting early gender. All NIPT tiers include fetal sex determination at no extra cost. If you would also like chromosomal screening alongside finding out your baby's gender, NIPT provides both from a single blood draw.

Your Appointment

What to Expect

Before Your Test

You must be at least 10 weeks pregnant, confirmed by a dating scan. If you have not yet had a scan, we can combine a dating or early pregnancy scan with your NIPT appointment. No fasting or special preparation is needed — just drink plenty of water beforehand.

During the Blood Draw

A small sample of blood is taken from your arm — exactly the same as a routine blood test. The draw takes just a few minutes and is no more uncomfortable than any standard blood test. There is no needle near your womb and absolutely no risk to your baby.

Your Results

Your blood sample is sent to an accredited laboratory for analysis. Results are typically available within 7-10 working days. We will contact you personally to discuss your results clearly and sensitively, and provide a written report for your records.

If Your Result Is High-Risk

A high-risk NIPT result is not a diagnosis. We will explain what your result means, answer your questions, and if you wish to proceed with confirmatory testing, refer you to a fetal medicine consultant for amniocentesis or CVS. You will be supported every step of the way.

FAQs

NIPT Test FAQs

How accurate is NIPT?

NIPT has a detection rate of over 99% for Down's syndrome (Trisomy 21) and over 98% for Edwards' and Patau's syndromes. It has a very low false-positive rate of less than 0.1%, meaning far fewer women are referred for unnecessary invasive procedures compared to traditional combined screening. However, NIPT is a screening test — not a diagnostic test. A high-risk result would be confirmed with amniocentesis or CVS before any decisions are made.

When can I have NIPT?

NIPT can be performed from 10 weeks gestation onwards. You will need a dating scan to confirm your gestational age before the blood draw. We can combine your NIPT with an early pregnancy or dating scan at our clinic in the same appointment for convenience.

Is NIPT the same as the Harmony or Panorama test?

Harmony and Panorama are brand names for specific NIPT tests offered by different laboratories. All NIPT tests work on the same principle — analysing cell-free fetal DNA in the mother's blood. The accuracy and conditions screened for are comparable across reputable laboratories. We use an accredited UK laboratory with established clinical validation.

What happens if my NIPT result is high-risk?

A high-risk NIPT result does not mean your baby definitely has a chromosomal condition — it means further investigation is recommended. We will discuss your result with you sensitively and clearly, explain what it means in context, and refer you to a fetal medicine specialist for counselling and confirmatory diagnostic testing (amniocentesis or CVS) if you choose to proceed.

Does NIPT replace the 20-week anomaly scan?

No. NIPT screens for specific chromosomal conditions, while the 20-week anomaly scan checks for structural abnormalities such as heart defects, spina bifida and limb differences. These are complementary assessments. We strongly recommend attending your 20-week scan regardless of your NIPT result.

Can I just find out the gender without the full NIPT?

Yes. If you only want to know your baby's sex and do not need chromosomal screening, our Early Gender Blood Test is available from £149. This uses the same cell-free DNA technology to determine fetal sex from 10 weeks. It is ideal for parents who simply want to know whether they are having a boy or a girl.

Combine With an Early Pregnancy or Dating Scan

Need to confirm your dates before NIPT? Book a dating scan alongside your blood test and see your baby on the same day. We offer combination appointments for convenience — just one visit for complete reassurance.
