Diagnostic Scan

Private Breast Ultrasound in Solihull & Birmingham

Breast tissue and axilla imaging for investigating lumps, cysts, and changes.

About This Scan

A breast ultrasound provides detailed imaging of breast tissue to investigate lumps, cysts, pain, or changes you may have noticed. We offer single and bilateral breast scans, axilla (armpit) scans, and combined breast and axilla packages. Ultrasound is a safe, radiation-free method of breast imaging that works particularly well for younger women with denser breast tissue. It is often used alongside mammography for comprehensive assessment.

What We Assess

  • Breast tissue assessment
  • Lump characterisation (solid vs cystic)
  • Axillary lymph nodes
  • Skin and nipple changes
  • Comparison between sides

Who Should Consider This Scan?

Recommended for anyone who has found a breast lump, is experiencing breast pain or tenderness, has noticed skin or nipple changes, has swollen lymph nodes in the armpit, or wants breast screening — particularly women under 40 for whom mammography may be less effective.

What to Expect

The scan takes approximately 15-20 minutes per breast. You will be asked to undress from the waist up and lie on the scanning bed. Warm gel is applied and the probe is moved systematically over the breast tissue. The scan is painless and there is no compression involved (unlike mammography).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is breast ultrasound a replacement for mammography?

Breast ultrasound complements mammography rather than replacing it. It is particularly useful for younger women with dense breasts, for characterising lumps found on mammography, and for women who cannot have mammography.

Can ultrasound detect breast cancer?

Ultrasound can identify suspicious masses that may require further investigation such as biopsy. It is an important part of the diagnostic pathway but is used alongside other methods for a complete assessment.
