Diagnostic Scan

Private Carotid Doppler in Solihull & Birmingham

Carotid duplex, temporal artery doppler, and aorta assessment for cardiovascular screening.

About This Scan

A carotid Doppler scan assesses blood flow in the carotid arteries — the major arteries supplying blood to your brain. This scan is important for stroke risk assessment, investigating dizziness or TIA symptoms, and cardiovascular health screening. We offer carotid duplex with aorta assessment, temporal artery Doppler, and comprehensive vascular packages. Using advanced Doppler technology, we measure blood flow velocity and identify any narrowing (stenosis) or plaque buildup in the arteries.

What We Assess

  • Carotid artery blood flow
  • Plaque and stenosis assessment
  • Intima-media thickness
  • Vertebral arteries
  • Aorta diameter
  • Temporal arteries (if included)

Who Should Consider This Scan?

Recommended for anyone with a history of TIA or stroke symptoms, patients with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes, those with a family history of stroke or cardiovascular disease, anyone experiencing unexplained dizziness or visual disturbances, or for general cardiovascular screening.

What to Expect

The scan takes approximately 30-45 minutes depending on the package. You will lie on the scanning bed with your head slightly turned. Warm gel is applied to the neck and the probe is placed over the carotid arteries. You will hear the sound of blood flow through the Doppler — this is normal. The scan is completely painless.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is carotid stenosis?

Carotid stenosis is narrowing of the carotid arteries, usually caused by fatty plaque buildup (atherosclerosis). Significant narrowing increases the risk of stroke and may require medical or surgical management.

Do I need a referral?
