Private Thyroid Ultrasound in Solihull & Birmingham
Thyroid gland and neck assessment for nodules, swelling, and abnormalities.
About This Scan
A thyroid and neck ultrasound provides detailed imaging of the thyroid gland to assess nodules, swelling, or abnormalities detected on examination or blood tests. The scan evaluates the size, shape, and texture of the thyroid, identifies any nodules and characterises them, and checks surrounding neck lymph nodes. This scan is essential for investigating lumps in the neck, abnormal thyroid function tests, or monitoring known thyroid conditions.
What We Assess
- Thyroid gland size and shape
- Thyroid nodules and their characteristics
- Thyroid vascularity
- Surrounding lymph nodes
- Parathyroid glands
Who Should Consider This Scan?
Recommended for anyone with a neck lump or swelling, abnormal thyroid blood tests, known thyroid nodules requiring monitoring, a family history of thyroid conditions, or symptoms such as difficulty swallowing or voice changes.
What to Expect
The scan takes approximately 15-20 minutes. You will lie on the scanning bed with your neck slightly extended. Warm gel is applied to the front and sides of your neck and the probe is moved over the thyroid area. The scan is completely painless.
Frequently Asked Questions
How are thyroid nodules assessed?
We evaluate nodules based on their size, shape, composition (solid vs cystic), borders, and vascularity. These characteristics help determine whether a nodule is likely benign or needs further investigation.
Will I need a biopsy?
Most thyroid nodules are benign. Based on the ultrasound appearance, we will advise whether further investigation such as a fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy is recommended.
